The other day I was talking with an SEO friend of mine and I mentioned that I was getting MacbookPro. The primary reason why I was getting this powerful machine was to facilitate transfer on a large media contract I was working on, using extremely large file sizes in a time crunch and a shift was necessary.
Now, about 90% of the money I make is by providing web content of some kind. It’s not all in core development but basically I put up pages or (mainly) provide a key component to a page without which that page would not exist and therefore not generate revenue. Normally, in the past, I’ve worked with PC’s and those machines have a lot of great tools, some of which cannot be found on a Mac. The moment I mentioned that I was getting a MacbookPro, my buddy said sarcastically, “…well, your web development career is over.” He then went on a diatribe about how he hated “those things” and blah blah blah.
I thought to myself, what a joke. I didn’t say that I was switching to Mac, getting rid of my PC’s, taking up .Mac as a hobby. I said nothing of the sort. I just said I was getting a MacbookPro. IN ADDITION TO. Whatever. It’s one of the biggest lines of bullshit I’ve heard and I’m not sure what the point is. I’m typing on the MacbookPro now, is my web develpment career over? Oh, I can’t use Frontpage on this machine (unless I switch over to Vista which I’m also running on the Mac). So what? I can do more on this machine than any other. It’s portable, it’s fast, it has all the functionality of a PC, it’s got Dreamweaver, it’s got Firfox. What they hell kind of dumb ass statement is that anyway?? This machine ENHANCES my web development career.
Oh well, this buddy of mine has said a few things regarding web development that have turned out to be bullshit, wishful thinking or whatever. I’m sure I’ve done the same. Regardless of the privileged position you might think you are in, nobody knows it all.
BTW, this guy is probably reading this post even though I haven’t told him about it and I have privacy. Connected people have their ways of snooping where they shouldn’t even be looking. I have the disadvantage of knowing and competing with this bloke but unfortunately, he can see all I do but I can’t see him. I suppose I could change registrars but I really like where I’m at.
Hey buddy, Screw Zoo! I now make at least 90% of my dough on web content AND I do it almost exclusively on a Mac. Don’t shoot your foot off with limitations. I LOVE “these things”!
